Local Abilene Restaurants

Enjoy a list of Abilene restaurants I’ve tried, and what I liked there. Included here are just locally-owned, independent establishments. Complete with mini-reviews, in no particular order:

El Fenix – it’s so nice and colorful inside, featuring a fiesta-style theme. And the courtyard at Burro Alley might be Abilene’s best-kept secret. I like the green chicken enchiladas. Good service.

Middle East Restaurant — a storefront, so it’s easily missed. The food is really good and very, very different from anywhere else in town. The owner and his family came here from Iraq. Read an interview in the ARN. Small interior.

Lytle Land & Cattle Company — nice environment inside, plenty of seating, quiet enough for conversation. I had a very delicious Blue Cheese Filet Mignon Salad. We’ve had good, young cowboys & cowgirls as servers.

Homemade Bread at Joe Allen’s Pit Barbecue — that is all – I just like that bread (sweet, white bread) a lot.

Bogie’s — the theme is Casablanca, which means Humphrey Bogart, hence “Bogie’s.” A popular lunch spot downtown. I’ve had several different kinds of good sandwich fillings.

The Dixie Pig — an old school diner. A large collection of ceramic pigs is displayed inside. A very local place.

Sweets du Jour — delicious brioche (special french bread) cinnamon rolls

Abi-Haus — teeny inside, visually outstanding. I appreciate what they’re trying to do and have done. It’s become a good hang-out spot for folks, especially millenials I think. One can’t really talk to each other inside when it’s busy. They have a gourmet chef & fresh/made-in-house ingredients here.

Bonsai Japanese Steakhouse — if you end up with good tablemates then it can be fun conversation, if you sit in the grill area. Otherwise you stare at each other awkwardly. Once I saw a woman there with others who spent the entire meal on her phone. The grill chefs do the tricks with the food and the fire, and that can be entertaining. We’ve had some fun times here. I’ve always had the Hibachi Chicken with fried rice.

Brick Oven Pizza Co. — since it’s cooked in a brick oven, it does taste different – and good.

Copper Creek — we had the best service we’ve ever had in Abilene here. The food was very good and the ambience was modern suburban.

A&M Donuts — little kids eating donuts in pajamas with grandparents, is what you’ll find some mornings here. Good donuts. A couple locations.

The Beehive — a little more formal and fancy, they have decorated pats of butter and nice tableware. The tables are very close together sometimes. This is a popular local place for steaks.

Perini’s (Perini Ranch) — I didn’t know meat could taste this good. People, folks around here know their beef. It was the filet I had, I believe. I also like the Zucchini Perini side dish. They have a cookbook. Actually located in Buffalo Gap, a short drive to enjoy the ranch environment.

Szechuan Chinese — the landscaped park in front of the establishment with it’s waterfalls and small ponds, is a definite positive addition to Abilene. Lots of seating, kind and attentive service, a large menu. I like occasional dishes from here, in-house or take-out.

Little Italy — I like Little Italy, and it’s homey touches inside to create an Italian ambience. The whole family likes the menu here. (I do also like Fazoli’s occasionally for fast-food Italian, and was glad when we moved here to find one.)

Natural Food Center — the smell of vitamins awaits you. They have a variety of fresh, organic offerings. It’s a combination health food store and cafe.

La Popular — several locations, breakfast-tacos-to-go galore, very popular.

Hernandez Bakery on Oak St. — they have these little cinnamon cookies that are delish, and I had my first scrumptious Carne Guisada here. Plus, I liked their tortillas and took home a package. I went through the drive-thru.

Ann’s Thai Kitchen — I like little Ann’s, it’s very Asian-feeling inside, and specifically Thai. I always get the chicken pad thai, family members like the yellow curry.

Casa Herrera — they’ve got this restaurant thing down pat: good service, a pleasant environment and good food. The standard fare is the best, I think.

Betty Rose’s — two locations, great sides. I like the sliced turkey, although most people get a brisket sandwich.

The Loft Sandwich Shop at Under One Roof — the nice thing about this one, is the location in the upstairs of an old downtown department store where a kitchen was already in place. They have a salad called pink fluff or something, that was fun-looking and sweet. Downstairs the store is chock-full of various booths of items, and some are available for sale up in the cafe seating section as well.

Hickory Street Cafe — for ladies who lunch, it’s located in a cute old house. I think everyone gets either quiche or the chicken salad – with a side of zucchini bread.

Enchilada Express — a local ACU young guy started this business recently. I like the green chicken enchiladas & the cilantro rice.

Monterrey’s — simple, casual, tasty. Bright and approachable inside, the place was busy the day I went for lunch. I really liked my taco.

Would like to try:

Cracker Barrel is pretty much where I go for pancakes, but I’d like to try The Flipping Egg.
